Every labor and delivery experience is a unique and special life event in a woman's life. Pregnancy is something most women experience at least once in their life, and labor and delivery is the culmination of the pregnancy and the entrance of a new life into this world. Even though a woman gives birth to more than one child, each and every labor and delivery experience is different and unique.
For instance, an expectant mother and her spouse plan on having their baby at the local hospital, and she has chosen an epidural catheter for pain control during labor and delivery. Her water breaks a few weeks early while at their remote cabin, and her husband delivers the baby just before paramedics arrive. Not exactly a planned event but everything turns out okay.
This is one of those stories that will follow that kid for the rest of their lives! And they probably could not or want to duplicate this during their next labor and delivery if they tried. This was their unique story, yet similar to the labor and delivery experiences of so many others. We just never know when the stork will arrive.
There are many decisions to make before the time of labor and delivery. You should feel comfortable with your health care provider, and be supported in your choices. If you want to have as much control as possible over the birth of your baby, you should consider having a birth plan in place. This allows you to express your desires as to what type of labor and delivery experience you want to have, if you want an IV, pain medication, or an epidural.
You may want to have a natural birth with no medications and as few medical interventions as possible, and that can be expressed in the birth plan as well. You can include your wishes for the time during labor, such as who you would like present, what comforts you would like available to you, and alternate choices and under what circumstances you agree to have them implemented.
The actual labor and delivery itself can be scary because of all the unknowns. Your health care provider is there to educate you and your partner, and support you throughout the pregnancy to the actual labor and delivery. This will greatly reduce any anxiety that is present and keep you positively focused. In general, the mortality rate of mothers and babies is very low, and labor and delivery ends successfully in most cases with the birth of a healthy infant. Finally all those months of planning the nursery, taking prenatal classes, and attending doctor’s visits is over, and now it is time for the real thing! The labor and delivery experience should be a joyous and celebrated event every time!
